Living in Malaysia where so many races and cultures are represented, we’re no stranger to the many superstitions Malaysians still believe to this day. We hear them all the time!

Even when it comes to living in our own homes, there are 329844293 superstitions that people believe. Things we shouldn’t do at home, how a house should be built, where it should be built, and the list goes on. Do any of these superstitions sound familiar to you?

1. The front gate of a house should not be facing a T-junction

It is believed lost spirits tend to linger on T-junctions as they don’t know which way to go. So if you don’t want any unwanted “visitors”, superstitious people would tell you to avoid houses on T-junctions at all costs.

Also, in terms of practicality, you wouldn’t want cars to constantly be shining their headlights directly at your house, especially if you’re the type who likes to walk around in your underwear. Shame shame!

2. There should not be any obstructions in front of the main door of the house

Keep the front door clear. Any pillars or lamps situated directly outside the main door should be removed unless you want it to block all that good energy!

3. The bigger the main door of the house, the better

Like many other things, bigger is always better. *Wink wink*

When it comes to the front door, it needs to be big enough to ensure that it will bring in plenty of wealth and good luck. Also, once you open the door, it should lead you to an open space and not a tiny corridor as this might limit the amount of wealth and luck coming in. Uh-oh.

3A. The number “4” is a major no-no

House number 4? More like house number 3A.

Whether it’s your home unit number, or the number of the jalan your house is on, “four” when said in Chinese is “sei“, which basically means “death”, and that’s not good. And don’t even get us started with the number 14!

5. Tear the roof and expose the house interior to sunlight for 49 days to get rid of spirits

Why 49 days? How will the sun get rid of the ghosts? You guess is just as good as mine!

6. It mustn’t be located near cemeteries, electrical power lines, water tanks, or communication towers

Wah, quite a long list right.

Many superstitious people believe that all these things can bring bad luck to your property. As for the cemetery, we all know why most people decide to keep away from it lah!

7. Any unnatural deaths that took place in the house makes it unlucky

By “unnatural deaths” we mean suicides, murder or other accident-related deaths. If and when someone had died of an unnatural death in the home, it’s deemed unlucky.

8. Drains should not run parallel to your main door

When standing at the main door, there should be no drains in sight that run parallel to the door as it is believed that this prevents good energy from entering the house. Must be the smell…

Well, do you believe any of these superstitions? Whether you do or not, you’d still want to know every single detail about the house, don’t you?
