While we may be a multicultural country, many of us tend to stick within our own ethnic communities and rarely venture beyond it.

And then there are also times where it is difficult for us to be exposed to the cultures of our fellow Malaysians because we’re separated by a body of water.

Hence is why it is amazing to see our Sabah and Sarawakian friends getting a well-deserved spotlight as they paraded down Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the Hari Gawai and Kaamatan Festival. The amazing scene was showcased by The Filmmakers Company Director and CEO, Sam Wong on his TikTok page.

Daily Express also shared Sam’s footage, writing, “Sabah and Sarawak natives have paraded around Kuala Lumpur in full traditional outfits to build awareness of their existence and culture. They engaged in friendly banter with fellow MRT passengers to promote East Malaysian and Borneo culture.”

The videos showcased the group flying to Kuala Lumpur while they danced and celebrated joyously in the aircraft.

Upon arriving in our country’s capital, they paraded down the streets in their gorgeous traditional wear, though some apparently mistaken them for Indonesian nationals.

“There were people asking us earlier on when we were walking along Petaling Street, ‘are you guys Indonesian?’ I said no.”

“We are Malaysian.”

They also took the MRT on their journey, where they mingled and took pictures with the passengers.

Many loved the display of the Sabah and Sarawakian culture and called for more!
