A trap camera in the Upper Western Forest Complex of Thailand recorded incredible footage of a tigress and her 3 cubs roaming in the area. Shared by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) organisation, the footage was recorded last year and is a rare sight given that there are estimated to be only 149 to 189 wild tigers left in all of Thailand.

Moreover, WWF said that the sighting of a tigress with 3 well-developed cubs is even rarer, which has given hope for the ongoing conservation efforts of the species in the country. The Upper Western Forest Complex of Thailand is one of only two regions in the country where wild tigers still roam.

The number of wild tigers in Thailand is still low and the population is vulnerable to poaching and prey depletion. Dr Rungnapa Phoojampa, the Senior Project Manager for WWF-Thailand shared,

“I’ve seen many camera trap videos of tigers, but this one really stands out, it’s beautiful… Many people are giving their time and effort into protecting Thailand’s tigers, such as the dedicated ranger teams and conservationists and it’s so rewarding to see this kind of video. It motivates us to keep going!”

Besides this footage, another trap camera recording showed a tigress that had dispersed from one population to another protected area. WWF-Thailand asserted that the presence of new female tigers raises the prospects of new cubs and an increase in the tiger population and demonstrates the importance of long-term tiger monitoring and collaboration between protected areas.

Awesome! Let’s hope the conservation efforts continue to bear fruits and these majestic creatures can continue to grow.
