We’ve been taught since a young age that Malaysians comprise of the ‘3 big ethnicities’, which are Malays, Chinese and Indians, alongside the native and indigenous people.

Only after years did we realise that the Malays, Chinese and Indians are called the ‘Big 3’ because the population of these different races in our country.

And speaking of population, according to ASEAN Skyline, it turns out that Malaysia has the highest population of Indians in Southeast Asia. They stated that there are about 2.9 million Indians in Malaysia (though we believe these numbers may be wrong as according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, there are about 1.9 million (6.6%) Indians in Malaysia).

Either way, they wrote, “Malaysia is the most Indian country in ASEAN. The 2 countries with the same blood and culture. You don’t need to go so far to India to feel and taste the great Indian culture. Just go to Malaysia, Singapore and Medan City, very near.”

“In Malaysia, Indian Tamil has special schools for Tamil speakers since Tamil is the 3rd biggest race in Malaysia, after Chinese and Malay. In Singapore, the Tamil language is the official language for Tamil ethnic groups. Note: there is neither a superior nor inferior culture. Every culture is great.”

This didn’t sit well with a lot of Malaysians

Indian 1

“I see Indians in Malaysia and Singapore are the same as their people in India. But Indians in Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines have become like native residents there. Indians in Malaysia and Singapore should be more thankful la.”

Indian 2

“Do not let the Malays to be shifted or become minorities to a point where the economy, politics and trades are controlled by foreigners.”

Indian 3

“10 years down the road, you will constantly see Malaysians saying ‘acha acha, nehi nehi‘ while shaking their heads.”

Indian 4

“HAHAH if Indian Malaysians do not know how to be thankful, I don’t know. Go back to their country where they don’t even have toilets. Residing here but claiming all kinds of things.”

Though, there were Malaysians who only had good things to say
