There’s this say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do, meaning to follow the traditions or customs of a place when visiting.

This can be observed when politicians and world leaders wear the traditional attire of a country during their visits, for instance, at the G20 Leaders’ Summit (an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union) that took place in Bali, Indonesia, on November 15 to November 16.

During the summit, world leaders such as Justin Trudeau (Prime Minister of Canada), Jacinda Ardern (Prime Minister of New Zealand), Lee Hsien Loong (Prime Minister of Singapore), Rishi Sunak (Prime Minister of the UK) and many more were spotted donning Indonesian traditionally-designed shirts.

Though, this didn’t exactly sit well with foreigners

Many have since taken to social media to share their confusion, and rather disrespectful and insulting opinions on the politicians’ choice to don cultural attire.

Thankfully, there were others to help raise awareness and educate those who are clearly ignorant towards the cultures of others

It is understandable for people to not know the cultures of others, considering there are so many different ones from all over the world. It is also understandable for people to not like the politicians from their home countries.

But that shouldn’t justify making a mockery out of someone’s traditional garbs.

In the age of information, ignorance is a choice.
