Like many young adults, once we finish our degree, we quickly look for a full-time job to start earning money.

However, a Singaporean actress, who is also a mother has shared how proud she is that her daughter who has graduated is self-sustaining but does not conform to the norm by getting a full-time job.

Tan Kheng Hua, 59, who all Malaysians know as Margaret in Phua Chu Kang uploaded a post on Instagram about her daughter.

“My daughter Shi-An graduated early this year. No, she hasn’t gotten a full-time job. No, she doesn’t exactly know what she wants to do in a fully committed way. No, she hasn’t got a well laid out plan as to when she’s going to buy her own place or get married or anything.”

The actress has said that the lack of plans does not bother her. Instead, she encourages her daughter to live in the moment and is incredibly proud of the fine woman that she has grown into.

“I’m really proud she’s not blindly following familiar Singapore paradigms for young university graduates. She is everything I and her father, Yubes hoped she would grow up to be. Curious. Hard Working. Resourceful. Vulnerable. Wilful. Imaginative. Responsible. Loving.”

“She actively pursues and discovers the depths and validity of her passions.”

Not having a full-time job doesn’t mean that Shi-An is dependent on her parents, rather she is a freelancer who is able to sustain her lifestyle, and take care of her family and her grandparents while having enough time to be a good friend and a wonderful fur-mum.

The 59-year-old actress is extremely grateful for her daughter as they have grown together as humans. She also expressed that she will be on the sidelines, supporting her in everything she does.

It is so heartwarming to see a mother being so supportive of their children’s passion.

Everyone’s reality is different and if one thing works for an individual, it does not mean that it is suitable for others. However, this level of support and trust is certainly refreshing and something that we believe more parents should have.
