A recent report published by international content delivery network service provider, Akamai has ranked Malaysia’s average Internet connection speed as the 10th fastest in Asia-Pacific. Akamai’s First Quarter 2017 State of the Internet Report states that Malaysia has an average connection speed of 8.9 Megabits per second (Mbps) while the top spot is taken by (obviously) South Korea at 28.6Mbps.

The Star reported that Malaysia’s recent Internet speed has actually increased by 40%, compared to a year ago. Akamai said, “Malaysia’s 10 Mbps Broadband Adoption has also increased, recording a 17% quarter-on-quarter change and a 179% year-on-year improvement.”

Meanwhile, the top spot with the highest average peak connection speed is our southern neighbour, Singapore, clocking in at 184.5Mbps. Malaysia’s average peak connection speed falls sorely behind, coming in on the ninth spot with 64.1Mbps. That’s more than half the difference!

Several other countries in Asia-Pacific that have an average peak connection speed of more than 100Mbps are Hong Kong, South Korea and Thailand.

Akamai reported that Malaysia’s improvement in speed was due to the implementation of 4G and 5G networks in the country and the driving force behind digital adoption is the “growing millennial population of young, tech-savvy consumers with substantial purchasing power.”

However, when this report was published, netizens from Malaysia were incredulous about the ranking and had some funny comments about it.

A cheeky netizen even said sarcastically, “Fast till my message was sent before I press send!”
