As if the weather these days is not erratic enough, hail started raining down in Cheras at 4pm yesterday (8 March).

In videos shared by Twitter user Emmil, she was able to record the moment when the hail started falling in Cheras.

The hail was falling together with the rain and according to her tweets, the hailstones were big enough to cause damage around her household; some windows broke and plants fell down.

“That is so scary, if it hits the head, there will definitely be injuries.”

It seems like the hailstorm was not felt by the whole Cheras as another netizen who lives in the district did not see it. It makes sense as Cheras is quite a big area!

“We are also in Cheras but there was no hail, we were in fact playing in the rain.”

Many netizens were very surprised by this occurrence and couldn’t believe that this is happening in Malaysia.

“It’s scary looking at the weather nowadays.”

According to MET Malaysia, hail is formed when there are severe thunderstorms coupled with heavy rain and strong wind.

“When an active cumolonimbus cloud reaches a height of 12KM, ice will start forming inside it.”

They added that hailstorms are normal in our country and this phenomenon is usually localised, meaning that only the area under the cloud will experience it. It usually lasts from 10-20 minutes.
