Because of the pandemic, most Malaysians living abroad had close to no opportunity to return home because of the Covid-19 travel restrictions. However, with the launch of the Malaysia-Singapore Vaccinated Travel Lane on 29th November, Malaysians living in Singapore can finally be reunited with their families here.

With all the reunions happening, one stood out recently because two siblings working in Singapore decided to go the extra mile and planned a surprise for their parents for their return to Malaysia. The siblings decided to disguise themselves as waiters working for a restaurant in a hotel and gave their parents bad customer service on purpose.

The whole journey was shared by Choong Kai Yee on her Facebook page. The video documented everything that the siblings did for the surprise as well as the reaction from her parents. She wrote,

“I haven’t seen my family for nearly two years. Every day I think about when I can go back. After the government opened the VTL, we were all super happy! We started planning to go home! At the same time, I told mommy that we won’t be back until the New Year. We started a series of plans! The eldest sister proposed to bring the family to Holiday Inn for a buffet. I suggested that we act as waiters.”

Initially, the siblings had to contact the hotel manager and explain the whole thing before getting permission to do so. The hotel manager even let them wear the hotel staff uniforms to ensure their disguise is more convincing. On top of the convincing uniforms, the SOP also requires all the staff to wear masks all the time, so their parents were not able to identify them.

接近2年没有见到家人 每天都想着几时可以回去…政府开始了VTL之后 我们都超开心!我们开始计划着回家!同时也跟妈咪说我们过年才回我们就开始了一连串的计划!大姐提议说要带家人去Holiday…

The siblings then intentionally gave their parents bad service so that they can interact more with them. From the video, we can see that the parents almost caught them but remained in doubt because their faces were still hidden. When Choong’s brother removed his face mask at about the 3-minute mark of the video, finally the whole act was exposed! After that, the whole family can be seen crying and hugging each other.

Choong explained that she made the video to ensure she has the memories of the touching reunion permanently for herself. At the time of writing, the video has garnered 464,000 views, 29,000 reactions and about 11,000 shares. From the 1,900 comments on the post, it can be seen that the majority that saw the video were touched by the sweet reunion.

It is heartwarming to see families reunited after being apart for so long because of the pandemic. We would like to ask more and more people to share their experience meeting their loved ones for the first time after so long. Spread the love all around!
