The one thing we truly love about Malaysia is our ability to form amazing relationships with our neighbours.

But one group of eight neighbours really outdid themselves when they decided to come together and turn their back alley into a gorgeous neighbourhood garden.

Aida Haniza Adnan took to the Kebun Bandar: Jom Tanam Sendiri Facebook group to showcase the garden that she and her neighbours affectionately named ‘Garden 8’.

She wrote, “Our neighbourhood garden in Taman Perwira, Gombak Setia. The hard work of eight families in realising the potential of our back alley that was once abandoned and lacked attention, into a garden that is not only picturesque and beautiful but also fruitful to its occupants.”

The amount of thought and consideration that they’ve put into the garden is truly amazing as they implemented green lifestyle strategies into their creation with:

  • a rainwater collection system (SPAH)
  • recycling food and garden waste into compost and fertiliser
  • preparing 3R recycling bins (for plastic, cans and paper)
  • using solar energy to illuminate the garden at night

But most importantly, the garden’s purpose is to build stronger relations among neighbours.

“Garden 8 is a place where we strengthen the brotherhood of our neighbours, a place to work up a sweat with gardening activities, for our children and grandchildren to learn about vegetables and herbs as all plants are labelled and the main attraction is the beacon of major cities in the world and the old names of those cities,” Aida explained.

They also have a scarecrow and a weather station for people to check the current temperature and rainwater level!

“Our hope is that Garden 8 can inspire others to develop neighbourhood gardens in their own areas,”

“For those who want to visit Garden 8, we welcome you. Neighbours united bring blessings,” Aida added.

The amount of effort and thought put into this garden is truly inspiring, but not as inspiring as the teamwork between the neighbours that made this garden a reality.

We genuinely hope to see more neighbourhoods participating in this and building their own vegetable and herb gardens!
