The state assembly in Sarawak has been dissolved effective 3 November, following the revocation of the emergency proclamation by the King.

In a live announcement, Chief Minister of Sarawak, Abang Johari Tun Openg revealed that the current state government will act as the caretaker until the upcoming election in the state.

This comes two days after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA) assented to lifting the localised emergency in Sarawak.

The dissolution has paved the way for the long-delayed Sarawak election, which must now be held within 60 days from 3 November.

The emergency proclamation was revoked after taking the public safety and health issues into consideration. It is also in accordance with article 21(2) Constitution of Sarawak and Section 3 (3) of the Ordinance.

Johari explained that the decision was based on how Sarawak had achieved an “acceptable” Covid-19 vaccination rate for an election to be held “safely” and “with all the necessary SOPs in place”.
