The number of Category 4 Covid-19 patients (those in need of oxygen) at the Covid-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC) at the Malaysian Serdang Agricultural Expo Park (MAEPS) has significantly reduced over the past three weeks.

According to PKRC MAEPS director, Dr Shahabuddin Ibrahim, only a total of 109 Category 4 patients are currently at the facility compared to the previous 450 to 500 patient admissions on average. The number of Category 4 patients had even reached an all-time high of 525 on 8 August.

“This shows a very significant reduction here (PRKC MAEPS) compared to the average number of Category 4 patients which was recorded at a total of 450 to 500 people in the last three weeks,” he told Berita Harian.

“Patients also need less oxygen than before. Alhamdulillah.”

Meanwhile, several hospitals in the Klang Valley that treat Covid-19 patients reported that bed usage for critical patients have been declining in the past week as compared to early July when most of the centres reached full capacity.

The situation at several hospitals, namely Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) and Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), have been experiencing a downward trend in Covid-19 patient admissions, proving that the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) has been effective.

As of now, Dr Shahabuddin said that the oxygen concentrator machines and oxygen tanks previously used for patients at PKRC MAEPS are now being used to help other states experiencing an increase in critical cases.

“Purchase preparations made with the help of the Selangor State Health Department and the Ministry of Health (KKM) which were originally intended for the use of PKRC MAEPS, as well as hospitals around the Klang Valley, can now help other states that are experiencing an increase in cases,” he said.

“To date, a total of 470 concentrators and oxygen tanks have been distributed to hospitals in Pahang, Johor, Penang, Perlis, Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu.”
