Malaysians should know by now that interstate travel is banned during the Movement Control Order (MCO). However, six individuals deemed a birthday party more important than the risk of contracting or spreading Covid-19 in other states.

According to Astro Awani, six teenagers aged between 14 to 18, were caught gathering in front of a house in Taman Baiduri, Kuala Ina Pulau Sebang, Melaka on 10 July. It was discovered that they had travelled interstate from Gemas, Negeri Sembilan to Melaka for a birthday celebration.

Alor Gajah District Police Chief, Superintendent Arshad Abu said all six of them were fined RM5,000 each for violating the standard operating procedures (SOP) according to the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures in Local Areas of Infection) (PPN) 2021 Regulations.

Meanwhile, the organiser of the party, a 17-year-old, was taken into custody.

Supt Arshad Abu said the compliance team from the Alor Gajah District Police Headquarters (IPD) arrested two men and five women who were sitting in front of a house. Investigations found that six of them had come from neighbouring states.

Further investigation also found that the six teenagers, who came to Melaka to surprise their friends, did not have any valid interstate travel documents and were compounded immediately.

“The behaviour of all these teenagers coming to the location just for entertainment is seen as very dangerous as some come from states that recorded a high number of daily Covid-19 cases,” Supt Arshad Abu said.

“The police called on the public to abide by the government’s instructions to stay at home and all suspects were taken to the Pulau Sebang Police Station for further action.”

On 11 July, Melaka recorded 278 new Covid-19 cases while Negeri Sembilan recorded 542 new cases, bringing the total number of new infections nationwide to 9,105.
