Over the weekend, we’ve seen two incidents where large and heavy construction material fell from the ‘sky’ – a concrete slab from the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) and a piece from a tower crane in SS2, Petaling Jaya.

And as if things can’t get any worse, another similar incident took place last night in Taman Len Seng, Cheras where a giant metal hook from a crane is believed to have fallen onto a car driving in front of the crane.

In the incident that took place at about 8.30pm on 20 September, the 55-year-old e-hailing driver managed to escape safely without sustaining any injuries. Photos of the incident circulating on social media show a severely damaged Proton Preve while firefighters investigated the scene.

However, Head of the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya said that the police could not find any item that might’ve caused the damage to the victim’s car.

“Investigations found that the driver of the car turned left to enter Jalan Len Seng from Cheras and was hit by a crane from behind that was moving on the same road,” he said, according to Berita Harian.

“As a result of the accident, the crane hook hit the roof of the car. The driver who was trapped in the car was removed with the help of firefighters.”

“The crane driver who has still not lodged a police report did not stop his vehicle and fled the scene.”

Zulkefly added that further inspection did not find any fragments of other objects on the car.

“The incident happened at a T-junction during heavy rain,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated in accordance with Regulation 3 (2) B of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (Rule 3 (2) BLN 166/59).”
