Everyone wants good complexion, period. Unfortunately, being Malaysian and living in this humid country coupled with our love for spicy and oily foods, good complexion is often nothing but a dream for us. We try 1,990,823 different products, DIY remedies, diets, and so forth, but nothing seems to work.

Well, have you tried going for laser treatments? For newbies, the word “laser” is enough to scare us into not wanting to give it a try. Doesn’t help that there are so many myths surrounding this form of treatment either. But before you avoid laser treatments completely, here are some common myths you’ve probably heard DEBUNKED:

1. MYTH: It’s extremely painful and it burns

FACT: Most people actually don’t feel anything during the procedure.

First off, depending on the treatment, most places would apply a numbing/anaesthetic cream to your face before starting the laser treatment. The most you would feel during the procedure is just a slight warmth of the skin. Nothing you won’t be able to handle.

Additionally, modern-day lasers are designed to specifically hit the damaged cells on your skin while leaving everything else alone.

2. MYTH: Skincare products are enough to combat any skin problem

FACT: Topical products may help your skin look better and brighter on the surface but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s working under your skin and it’s often only temporary.

Whether it’s acne, age spots, freckles, melasma or even birthmarks, many skincare products that contain vitamin C, retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, and so forth may help brighten and exfoliate your skin to solve these problems to a certain extent BUT it may not give you the final results you were hoping for. The results produced by skincare products are often minimal and it depends on the severity of your condition.

Laser treatments like the PicoSpot laser, however, helps by penetrating thermal energy deep into the skin to encourage dermal collagen production. It also generates a laser-induced optical breakdown to target pigmentation in the dermis and epidermis by destroying the targeted skin cells that cause pigmentation as well as acne, age spots, freckles, melasma and birthmarks. However, because everyone’s skin is different, the results may vary.

3. MYTH: Lasers will cause the skin to thin out and become weak

FACT: Lasers actually help to remove older, damaged cells on the skin to make room for new collagen to be produced underneath.

More than anything, laser treatments actually remodels collagen bundles in your skin to strengthen the epidermal layer of the skin, improve elasticity, tighten enlarged pores, and more!

4. MYTH: Laser treatments contain radiation and can cause cancer

FACT: These types of lasers don’t contain any radiation and only use a highly concentrated form of ordinary light.

In fact, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a study on laser treatments over the past 25 years has shown no evidence that laser treatments can cause cancer. They’re also generally considered to be safe as any possible harmful ultraviolet radiation is filtered by blocking wavelengths below 500nm.

What’s more, only a wavelength below 400nm may lead to the breaking down of DNA strands which, in turn, causes cancer. Fortunately, the laser devices used for facial treatments emit a much higher wavelength that is safe for the skin and body.

5. MYTH: All laser treatments are the same, the only difference is the company or brand

FACT: There are actually numerous types of laser treatments available that target different skin issues.

The different laser treatments can actually be categorised as ablative or non-ablative. Ablative lasers basically vaporise the top layers of damaged skin while non-ablative lasers penetrate deeper within the skin without removing the top layers.

An example of the ablative laser is the Carbon Dioxide Laser (Co2) that is often used for skin rejuvenation but comes with many side effects and is recommended to be used on lighter skin tones only.

As for the non-ablative laser, one of the latest, most promising treatments currently available is the PicoSpot laser treatment.

This FDA approved technology treats all types of pigmentation issues, rejuvenates collagen, and promises instant results with minimal downtime.

It also uses Korean technology!

Some of the skin problems it can effectively treat include:

  • Freckles – small brown spots typically caused by overproduction of melanin and/or exposure to the sun.
  • Melasma – brown, greyish blotches that can be triggered by pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and more.
  • Age spots – dark areas on the skin that vary in size as a result of sun exposure and overactive pigment cells.
  • Birthmarks – come in different shades, from brown, tan, black to red, purple, pale blue and more and have no particular causes.
  • Acne spots – dark spots caused by acne that are usually flat against the surface of the skin.
