800 workers at a factory in Jitra, Kedah managed to escape the building after it went up in flames yesterday (8 September).

The warehouse containing beverage processing materials at the DXN Factory in Jalan Bukit Wang was destroyed in the fire in the 12pm incident, reported Harian Metro.

Senior Superintendent of Fire at the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Kedag, Wan Hamizi Wan Mohd, his department received a call about the fire at about 12 noon. Three fire brigades from the Jitra, Alor Setar and Jalan Raja Fire and Rescue Stations (BBP) arrived at the location at 12.24pm.

“The operation was attended by 24 members and two officers along with four machines and a tanker,” he said.

“Additionally, nine members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) participated in the operation.”

Wan Hamizi added that about 70 per cent of the area was burnt and the fire spread quickly due to the hot weather as well as strong wind.

He said that investigations found that the warehouse contained materials like coffee powder, sugar, creamer and a processing machine.

A stall trader who wishes to remain anonymous said he heard the siren of several fire engines before he saw a cloud of smoke coming from the factory area. He said no explosion occurred at that time causing him to be unaware of the fire.

“I just saw a lot of factory workers gathering outside the factory area when the fire broke out. Luckily everyone is safe,” he said.

However later that night, the same factory caught fire again, as reported by Info Roadblock JPJ/POLIS. Photos show flames blazing out of the building at night.

It is still not known what had caused the fire the second time.
