On 8 August, a video of a university student getting slapped with an RM1,000 fine went viral.

In the video, the male student was at the Rawang KTM station and his mask was down. He said that he felt itchy so he pulled it down for a while and that caused him to get fined. Just by thinking about the hefty amount, the student then broke down and we can see a few women trying to comfort him.

Just as the video went viral, people and even Syed Saddiq questioned the authorities on why double standards apply to different people of different status.

Some of them showed pity to the distressed student:

“Pity him. The RM1K is a huge burden especially for a student like him. It’s not like he wasn’t wearing a mask at all, a simple warning would’ve sufficed. How about the ministers who are roaming around without masks on?”

In a Facebook post by Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, he has expressed sympathy on behalf of his party and they have offered to pay the fine for him.

“The Kepong DAP branch sympathises with the student who was compounded for not wearing a mask at the KTM station. To the student, please message me so that I can help pay off the fine. I also hope that everyone including teens will abide by the SOPS to curb the spread of Covid-19.”

Do you think the student should be warned or do you think he is should be fined? Let us know in the comments.
