SPM Mandarin is not an easy subject to pick-up, given the degree of complexity by which the language and literature used is often given to students. For some native speakers, the language has proven to be so challenging that they may have even dropped the subject entirely from their SPM certification entirely.

But for one Malay teenager, that hasn’t stopped him from trying to pick up what has been described as being the most difficult language to learn for his SPM, according to Sin Chew Daily.

If that wasn’t incredible enough on its own, bear in mind that this Malay teenager decided to take up SPM Mandarin alone. No-one else in his entire school, including Chinese students, wanted to take the subject!

As a student who had been learning Mandarin since he was a young boy in a Chinese primary school, the Malay teen developed a love for the language as well as a keen interest in the traditional Chinese art of calligraphy. Along with two of his sisters, they would often participate in many Chinese organised cultural festivals to hone their calligraphy skills together.

Given that fact, he decided that he wanted to continue learning Mandarin, even at SPM-level, and was the only student in his whole school to take it. Despite only receiving a passing grade of D for his efforts, he was not dismayed.

In fact, he thanked his Mandarin teacher, who was worried if he could catch up to the syllabus, for being willing to teach him, despite being the only student to take Mandarin for SPM! How sweet!

Now if that isn’t a show of Malaysian unity and respect for each other’s cultures, we don’t know what is! We congratulate the student on his SPM achievements, and wish him all the best on the road ahead in life!
