Growing up in Malaysia, many of us had attended certain “Kem Motivasi” at school, whether during primary or secondary school, it’s more or less the same concept where they were trying to make innocent students cry.

A netizen (@shasxraya) on Twitterjaya brought up this particular style of motivation camps while condoning how terrible they actually were. Soraya said that these so-called motivation camps are so f*cked up because organisers traumatise a bunch of school kids by showing them sad videos and making them cry.

These motivation camps are known to guilt trip kids into thinking they are bad children, and that they need to respect their parents and teachers. Apparently, there were students who had experienced extreme guilt-tripping when they did not cry. The camp facilitators would ask students to shut their eyes and think about their parents, as well as brothers and sisters, and proceed to make them tear up with tragic scenarios.

Netizens relate to Soraya’s tweet and this “starter pack” hit too close to home, although it’s just a meme. Many shared their experiences when they participated in these camps, and it seemed like they have similar experiences despite coming from different camps.

“One time the MC said whoever who can’t stand watching (the video), they can get out of the surau. So I did. But the Ustaz pulled me back in and lectured me like crazy.”

Another netizen recalled that she got lectured (and brainwashed) by her senior just because she didn’t cry, and the senior even accused her of not loving her parents!

Many students grew up laughing about their experience at the camp, while some left the camp thinking it was extremely boring.

What have you experienced going to these “kem motivasi”? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
