National athletes spend a lot of time training and on the road, competing for the glory of their country and families.

But, a lot of times when they’re on the road, they tend to miss out on important moments and can be hit with hardships from their personal lives.

For instance, Indonesian Wushu athlete Edgar Marvelo had lost his father the day he had won his first gold medals for both the men’s Gunshu and Daoshu events. The official 2019 SEA Games Facebook page shared the news.

They wrote, “Winning the golds for men’s Gunshu and Daoshu events of Wushu yesterday came as a bittersweet moment for Indonesian Edgar Xavier Marvelo. People in his team were in tears after his victory and those were not just tears of joy. Edgar’s father died while he was competing in the event, and he was only informed about it after winning the gold, bringing him to tears. He dedicates his gold medal to his country and to his father.”

Edgar had managed to fly home right after his receiving his medals, just in time to attend his father’s funeral. He had placed his gold medals in the coffin as he dedicated the win to his father.

He wrote in his Instagram story, “Finally meeting my dad, he’s wearing my medals now.”

Considering Edgar is such a dedicated son, his father must be so proud of him, and how he had represented and honoured his country and family by bringing home not 1 but 2 gold medals.

We’re sending our love, prayers and condolences to Edgar and his family.

May he rest in peace.
