My father once told me that being careful on the road isn’t just about watching your own driving.

“Others on the road can be careless too,” he said. In Malaysia, this isn’t limited to cars and motorbikes either.

A recent accident in Subang made me realise how important my father’s words are, as a little 3-year-old girl lost her mother to a driver in a Range Rover who had lost control of her car, as posted by Shamsuddin Ismail on his Facebook page.

As according to Sinar Harian, the incident, which happened just across the road from Da Men USJ, occurred when the 20-year-old driver of the Range Rover swerved to avoid a pedestrian and lost control of her car, and ended up hitting 2 motorcycles that had stopped at the red light and another pedestrian.

2 people, including the mother of the 3-year-old girl, who is a Myanmar national, lost their lives while 4 others, including the little girl and her father sustained severe injuries to their heads and bodies.

“It was heartbreaking to hear the voice of the little girl calling out to her mother, “Mummy, mummy!”. It was clear that she was just starting to recognise the love and affection of her mother,” Shamsuddin wrote in his posting.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Our hopes and prayers are with the little girl and the other victims of the crash.
