Not sure what do to for the weekend? Well, we’ve got the perfect event for you to attend because not only will you be able to enjoy beautiful art at this event but you will also learn about the Indian culture in Malaysia.

Curated by Thavarupani (Ruby) Subramaniam, the exhibition aims to educate Malaysians about the Indian culture, which is one of the oldest cultures in the world; and this interactive art exhibition will allow Malaysians experience the culture for themselves.

So, without further ado, here are TWO events you can anticipate in at the Banana Leaf: A Celebration of Malaysian Indian Art & Culture exhibition which will be happening all throughout this week.

1.  Immerse yourself into art & photography inspired by Indian culture

What better way to learn about a culture than through art and photography? I truly believe that a simple piece of art and pictures can speak more than a couple of words written on a piece of paper.

So, you can expect to be blown away by the various pieces of art and pictures that perfectly capture Indian culture. For instance, the drawing of Kolam – which is an ancient practice – that no one really knows about.

Have you ever wondered why Indians use rice flour/chalk powder to draw geometrical patterns in front of their house gate/door? You can learn about it in this exhibition!

In the Banana leaf exhibition, you will be educated about the Indian people’s daily, ancient practices that we normally see, but never understood. Here are some of the exhibits that you can expect to see:

  • Ganesha’s Footsteps – Photography
  • Invitation of Abundance – Visual Arts
  • Saraswati’s Children – Kids Art
  • Vishnu in Motion – Audio Visual & Documentary

Now, don’t worry if you haven’t got a clue about Indian culture because you will have two guided tours at 2pm which will be available on the following days:

  • Saturday (19th October 2019)
  • Sunday (20th October 2019)

FYI, the exhibition comprises of 68 photos, 31 artworks (professional artists) & 43 artworks (Goodkids). Amazing!

2. Go wild with your imagination and unleash your inner child with Inner Flow

In the midst of trying to teach people about Indian culture, the Banana Leaf exhibition also wants to spread the message of loving yourself. The event curator Ruby said,

“When we catch our reflection in the mirror, we usually straighten up for vanity. In this interactive motion capture installation, the artist removes colour and details from (the) image. The self is then made less conscious about their physical appearance.”

What’s even more amazing is that you can play with the motion capture by moving your arms & legs around, and you will “watch it turn into digital lines”. Isn’t that interesting?

Are you excited to pay a visit to this exhibition? If you said yes then here are some of important deets that you should know:

  • Date: 4th till 20th October 2019 (this weekend is the last day, guys!)
  • Venue: GMBB Mall, KL

Of course, after an educational tour, you would have a lot of questions to ask but fret not, because you can present those questions to the discussion panel on Sunday. Oh, and they are serving Payasam during the exhibition’s wrap up because what better way to close an event inspired by Banana Leaf than the famous Payasam, itself. Don’t miss it!

All in all, as an Indian, I’m definitely happy to see so many Indian artists coming together to educate people about our culture and traditions. I really do hope that you will use this opportunity to learn about a community that has been living amongst you for a very long time.

Will I be seeing you at the exhibition? Let us know in the comments below!
