Recently, a few cases of people misusing our flag, the Jalur Gemilang, went viral on sosial media.

Here’s one:

The company shown in that particular image has since explained that the flags were installed by a foreign worker who didn’t know better, but we gotta ask, why didn’t anyone say anything sooner??

That said, some might be wondering, isn’t flying an upside-down flag a sign of distress? Yes, it could be, BUT in Malaysia, our flag also signifies our YDPA. So if you terbalikkan the flag then that means you are dishonouring our YDPA!

Malay Mail reported that action will be taken against those who intentionally misuse the national flag whether physically or online, said the Johor Police Chief Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din yesterday, 21st August.

He also listed down 3 laws that can and will be used on those people, which are:

Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentionally insulting or provoking someone to break the public peace;

Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for using any indecent or abusive words or behaviour with the intention of breaking the peace;

Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for wrongful use of network facilities.

The police chief said in a statement that the public is advised to uphold the sovereignty of the country and also to STOP spreading unverified news as to not disrupt the peace and harmony in our country.
So guys, before you hang up your flags for Merdeka and Malaysia Day, make sure that you’re doing it respectfully!
