A local survey that was done by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) revealed that Malaysians eat less than half the amount of fruits recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

On average, Malaysians consume only 120gm of fruits daily, which was indeed less than half of the 400gm daily intake suggested by the organisation.

Truthfully, we could all use more fruits in our diet, right?

According to Fama Chairman Datuk Ishak Ismail, the agency is currently directing farmers in 380 locations to aid in the effort of promoting the consumption of local fruits.

Efforts are also made by the agency to promote healthy eating habits in schools.

“We want children to eat more fruits. Fama is holding a direct sale of fruits from farmers in 380 locations nationwide.”

According to Dietitian Lim Fei Ai, women are encouraged to take two to three servings of fruit daily.

Those with hypertension are advised to eat four to five servings daily.

She adds that juicing may not be the best way to consume fruit.

“I don’t recommend juicing. You might need a few minutes to eat fruit, but you only need 10 seconds to swallow a glass of fruit juice.

“This increases your rate of fructose ingestion. Chew your fruit. But if you must juice, then include the pulp instead of filtering it out.”

Remember, a piece of banana here and a few slices of oranges there is definitely not enough for a day’s worth of fruit intake.
