We have always been reminded not to drink bottled water left in a hot car because the chemicals from the bottle would seep into the water.

However, there is another reason you might not want to leave water bottles inside your car in the hot sun — it might catch fire!

Yes, under the right conditions, the water inside the bottle could focus sunbeams, just like a magnifying glass, onto the seats of your car, which is somewhat flammable.

As reported by PNJ, an experienced battery technician in Idaho, US was sitting in his car when he saw smoke coming from his front seat.

Upon further investigation, he noticed the sunlight hitting a water bottle, burning two holes in his seat.

You can watch the video of the incident here:

Safety Check: Water Bottle in a Hot Car

Did you know that on a hot day, a see through water bottle in your car has the potential to start a fire? Neither did Stations Battery Technician Dioni Amuchastegui.

According to Mental Floss, the fire department in Oklahoma also did their own test and concluded that the risk for it to happen is high and the danger is present.

If the water bottle incident could happen in the US, then surely the risk is higher in our sunny and hot Malaysia. Although the overall chances of it to happen is small, you shouldn’t take chances.

We imagine if you’re someone with lots of things like papers and pillows in your car, the risk of these flammable things being burnt is way higher.

Maybe it’s time to clean your car. It would look nicer and have a lesser chance of catching flames!
