This is what being a Malaysian truly means – helping one another!

An American columnist was blown away by Malaysians’ kindness towards his daughter, who was stuck in KLIA during a 12-hour layover. In a tweet, CJ Werleman explained that his 18-year-old daughter was stranded at KLIA without cash because she had lost her only debit card.

The poor girl was distraught because she couldn’t buy any drinks or food because she had no money with her. But, her woes came to an end when a good Samaritan offered some help.

CJ wrote that while he and his wife were trying to get money to their daughter, they were shocked (in a good way) when an elderly Muslim man and his family came to their daughter’s rescue. The family generously gave the girl two bars of chocolate, grapes, a bottle of water and some money – RM50.

You can read the full tweet below:

If you didn’t know the details already, CJ and his wife, who were in Australia, tried sending money to their daughter but they couldn’t find a way that could work. They said that they tried sending money through Western Union but it would have taken two days. They also tried Apple Pay but the service doesn’t accept Australian bank cards. Oh dear!

Following that, an update tweet from CJ revealed that his daughter slept in her sarong at KLIA before flying off. At the time of writing, his daughter has safely arrived in Australia and he thanked “the dozens of Malaysians who offered to bring her a meal”. Well, isn’t that nice to hear!

According to The Malay Mail, earlier in April 2019, CJ – who is also a social activist working against Islamophobia – tweeted that he is very “encouraged by how well the government is managing and providing care for Rohingya Muslim refugees”. His tweet is shown below:

Well, we’re glad that CJ’s daughter has reached Australia safely and we would also like to thank the kind family who went out of their way to help her.

On that note, we should adopt a similar attitude to the family above and help one another whenever we can. The world would be a much better place to live in if we were all tolerant and helpful towards one another.
