The RFID (radio frequency identification) system is expected to be fully implemented starting January 2019, reported The Star. This system uses stickers implanted with an RF chip that is unique to each vehicle as it sets them apart. Just like a Road Tax sticker!

This sticker will then be linked to the Touch ‘n Go eWallet where you can track your balance and top up credit using online banking or debit/credit cards. The report then revealed that RFID – which is also used in countries like America and Argentina – is expected to take over SmartTAG soon.

Therefore, Touch ‘n Go (TNG) will not be selling any more of their SmartTAG devices starting today (8 August 2018) to pave way for the new technology. However, you can still use your existing SmartTAG devices and TNG Cards to make payment at the tolls. Your MyKad can still be used for payments at tolls too.

With that said, TNG has set to carry out an extended RFID pilot phase at highways and expressways all around Malaysia and findings from this trial phase will be used to further upgrade the system.

So, these RFID lanes will be available on 3 September 2018 on highways and expressways mentioned below:

  • Kuala Lumpur – Karak Expressway (KLK)
  • Damansara – Puchong Expressway (LDP)
  • Cheras – Kajang Highway (GRAND SAGA)
  • Lebuhraya Grand Sepadu (GRAND SEPADU)
  • Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS)
  • Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (SILK)
  • Maju Expressway (MEX)
  • Duta – Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE)
  • Stormwater Management And Road Tunnel (SMART)
  • New Pantai Expressway (NPE)
  • Besraya Expressway (BESRAYA)
  • Sistem Penyuraian Trafik KL Barat (SPRINT)
  • Kuala Lumpur – Kuala Selangor Expressway (LATAR)
  • Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH)
  • Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE)

So, if you want to be a part of the RFID lane trial, you can send your contact details to TNG via their website.  After that, prior to the RFID pilot kick-off, you will receive an email asking you to register your vehicle’s information and to set an appointment for RFID’s installations via the TNG RFID Portal’s appointment system.

Well, this new initiative is very interesting as it intends to make our lives easier and we hope that the system does actually live up to its expectations.

Will you be signing up for the RFID pilot this September? Let us know in the comments below!
