Our local public universities have made Malaysia proud once again!

Much to our delight, four of our public universities have made it to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings Top 50 under 50 2019.

If you didn’t know, the QS World University Rankings is an annual prestigious publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds, a British company that specialises in education.

The Star reported that four renowned local universities were QS’ choice for top young universities under 50 years old. Their ranks are as follows:

  • Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) – 12th place
  • Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) – 13th place
  • Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) – 14th place
  • Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) – 18th place

You may be wondering – why didn’t Universiti Malaya (UM) make it into the list?

Well, that’s because UM’s age didn’t qualify for the list as the universities on the list have to be 50 years old and below. UM was built in 1905, which means it’s 113 years old. This makes it the oldest university in Malaysia.

UKM’s vice-chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali said that this achievement is a gift to Malaysia.

He was quoted as saying,

“UKM is very proud yet humbled by this best-ranking achievement since our establishment in 1970. This is our special gift for Malaysia.”

He also explained that this proves that the university is on the right path towards success.

“We must continuously measure ourselves with global peers without forgoing our national motives,” he added.

Meanwhile, the very young but famous Taylor’s University made it to the top 100 list. It’s only eight years old!

Taylor’s vice-chancellor and president Prof Micheal Driscoll said,

“This is an exceptional result, particularly as Taylor’s University is just over eight years of age, the youngest university in the world to make it to the top 100 list.”

“This achievement also highlights Taylor’s ongoing commitment to being a truly world-class university that is recognised globally for its research strengths, engagement industry and innovative teaching pedagogy.”

QS research director Ben Sowter said that the list for 50 under 50 top young universities has been dominated mainly by universities hailing from the Asia-Pacific region. Asia and Australia alone have occupied 27 out of 50 places on the list.

“Our Top 50 under 50 Ranking is no consolation prize for those universities that are included: 47 of the top 50 place among the top 400 of our overall table, and all 50 have featured among the top 400 at some point in their brief but successful histories,” shared Ben Sowter in a statement.

That said, emerging on top of the list is Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (first place) followed by Hong Kong University of Science & Technology and Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology. Congrats, guys!

We are very happy that these universities made it into the list! We congratulate UKM, UPM, USM and UKM for their achievement and hope that they will continue to practise world-class pedagogy and initiate more research initiatives that will contribute to our country’s betterment.

Here’s to more achievements in the education world!
