Education plays an important part in our lives as it helps to shape us into the useful grown ups we are today. Most of us have been through the Malaysian education system and we each have our own feelings about it.

For caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, he feels quality education in Malaysia is now easily accessible to all citizens. Based on a report by The Star, he said that if in GE14, should Barisan National be given the mandate to govern again, they would continue this “democratisation of education”.

He said that this proves Malaysia was very different from many countries, whether advanced or developing. He added, “Quality education is now accessible to all. It is not limited by socio-economic status or race, but the will of the individual to pursue what they want. I wish to see students possess knowledge, higher-order thinking skills, leadership, dual-language (proficiency), spirituality, and national identity.” Really?

Datuk Seri Najib said that he is proud of the progress that the Malaysian education system has made, which was helped by the RM56 billion given by the government to improve the education system. He explained that this amount was more than double the money allocated in other Asean countries, which proves that they care very much about Malaysia’s education system.

“If you want to count the subsidies for students, it is very high. This is something that most do not know or even appreciate. The subsidy for a primary school pupil can reach RM8,000 a year and it is more than RM9,000 a year for a secondary school student. We also shoulder 90% of the costs for public higher education institution students,” he said.

These were said at a speech during the launch of the Pekan Teachers’ Day celebration and educational excellence award. He added, “We seek to ensure the nation becomes one that is regarded well and highly on the international stage. Success is never ending, failure is not final.”

What do you think of our education system?
