Many of you may be familiar with Gunung Nuang located in Hulu Langat as many hikers train on this mountain in preparation for hiking up Mount Kinabalu.

The 1,493 metre mountain is the highest point in Selangor and has one of the most challenging and difficult terrains for hikers, which can take more than 11 hours to reach its peak and back down.

Sadly, one hiker could not complete his trek as he suddenly collapsed and died while making his way to the mountain’s peak on Saturday (19th August), according to the New Straits Times.

35-year-old Aw Kok Cheng was reportedly hiking up the mountain with seven friends when he collapsed near the Pengasih checkpoint at 12.15pm.

His friends promptly alerted the Fire and Rescue Department. They started their operation at 3.15 pm and took nearly 24 hours to transport Aw’s body down the mountain.

“The operation was dampened by bad weather and difficult terrain. The team only managed to meet with the climbers, all men, around 7am today (20th August),” said Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Muhamad Hissam Sidik.

“Aw’s body has been handed over to police for further action.”

The man’s body was sent to Serdang Hospital for a post-mortem to determine what caused his sudden death.

Our thoughts go out to the deceased’s family and loved ones. What a horrible tragedy!
