Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has announced the appointment of controversial figure Datuk Seri Ramesh Rao as his special officer in charge of matters related to the Indian community. With the position, Ramesh is now responsible for approaching and engaging with members of the Indian community in Malaysia.
As reported by Malay Mail, Zahid made the announcement during a unity government luncheon at Sree Maha Kaliamman Temple in Shah Alam yesterday (24 December 2022). Referring to Ramesh as his “younger brother”, the Deputy Minister asserted,
“I would like to announce the appointment of a special officer for the Indian community nationwide, Ramesh Rao. It doesn’t matter if you are a supporter of PKR, DAP, or any other party for that matter. We must treat all races in this country well,”
During his speech, Zahid joked that if the voices of the Indian community go unheard, then it is not the fault of the Prime Minister or his deputies, but the blame would lie on Ramesh. A staunch Barisan Nasional (BN) supporter, Ramesh is active on social media and can be seen commenting on pretty much any political posts to defend BN and nowadays, members of the unity government.
He previously courted controversy earlier this year after Bukit Aman summoned him over a tweet alleging that the judge in former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1MDB-linked SRC International corruption case was biased. Ramesh had falsely claimed that the judge was either the grandson or grandnephew of another former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad.
