Apparently, Vancouver, Canada has an issue with drivers and motorcyclists speeding, especially through crosswalks where they can endanger pedestrians. Sound familiar?

Well, it’s no secret that Malaysian road users aren’t exactly respectful of pedestrians, with there even being an instance where multiple vehicles (cars and motorcyclists) sped past a red traffic light at a crosswalk in KL where a family was waiting to cross the road.

There was once an elderly uncle in Penang who even had to swing his bag at a motorcyclist who had run a red light while he was crossing the road!

Well, a Vancouver non-profit group has since provided a hilarious, yet somewhat risky, solution on April Fools Day, for this similar issue they’re facing.

Taking to their Twitter page, Vision Zero Vancouver showcased how they prepared realistic-looking foam bricks for pedestrians to use to ‘threaten’ vehicles into slowing down and stopping for them at crosswalks, and Canadians are LOVING it.

“Here at Grandville Island, we’re rolling out a new pilot project, the Pedestrian Brick Crossing System. A friendly wave with a Pedestrian Brick is sure to attract the attention of the errant driver and ensure comfortable, conflict-free crossing of any busy street.”

“Step 1, pick up the brick. Step 2, look both ways. Step 3, make eye contact if possible and wave the brick, showing off its bright colour and attractive corners. Step 4, complete your crossing and deposit the brick in the receptacle on the opposite side of the crossing,” they shared.

While the brick is meant to ‘scare’ road users into stopping for pedestrians or they’ll possibly get a ‘brick’ thrown at them, the campaign is meant to be a hilarious (and non-violence inducing) way to educate and raise awareness of pedestrian safety.

Would you think such a strategy would work in Malaysia or would it cause road users to get angry as they might feel threatened? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
