A viral incident shocked netizens in Indonesia recently after a video circulated online of a group of villagers exhuming the corpses of a married couple from their graves at a cemetery in Dannuang, Ujung Loe in Bulukumba, South Sulawesi.
According to Indonesian news outlet Tribun News, the corpses were then moved to another cemetery allegedly because the daughter of the late couple held a different political view from the owner of the cemetery.
Villagers dig the graves of an Indonesian couple and move the remains to another cemetery due to political differences
The report revealed that the corpses exhumed from the cemetery were of Mattayang Daeng Lengu, who passed away on 13 March 2022, and his wife, Nurlia, who died on 27 July 2023.
Following the recent 2024 Regional Elections in Indonesia, the late couple’s daughter, Nurmi, had a feud with the cemetery owner due to their political views, as Nurmi didn’t approve of the politician the cemetery owner voted for during the election.
Nurmi then asked villagers to help exhume the remains of her parents and move them to a cemetery at Manjalling village.
The village head agreed for the bodies to be moved to a cemetery in Manjalling so that the feud would not escalate further.
Besides that, a representative from the Bulukumba regent, Andi Edy Manaf, also met with Nurmi to hear her grievances and also hoped that the matter would end there as the corpses were already moved to the cemetery in Manjalling.
