Our national athletes are the pride and joy of our country. Not only do they help to spread a good name and reputation for Malaysia, but they also help to unite us as Malaysians.

However, we were recently shocked by the news that the National Sports Council will be cutting the allowances of athletes from RM2,000 to RM800.

After plenty of backlash following the decision, Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu went on to explain the reason behind the cut.

Yesterday (10 January 2022), Faizal said that the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) never intended to be cruel towards the athletes to the point of  having to implement cuts and restructure their allowances.

He stated that they are always finding the best alternative to help their athletes, financially.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports is trying their best to act as responsible parents for their fellow athletes. We’re (KBS) not their step-father or step-mothers to be this cruel. “

He mentioned that they only want the best for their athletes, and that the decision was made to show that they are a responsible government who only spend when necessary and needed.

Adding to the point, he said that they would like to put priority on more important things.

“We’re trying our best right now. Imagine, me as the Minister of Youth and Sports that was just appointed this position 5 months ago, why would I want to see my athletes not getting any allowance. If possible I would add more (allowance).”

Faizal hopes that fellow Malaysians will understand why the decision was made.

He also assured that KBS will be looking for the best alternatives to take care of the athletes’ welfare, especially  ones that have contributed a lot to the country, including injured and former athletes.

Athletes are indeed a source of pride and joy of our country, so we hope that their welfare will be taken care of as best as possible because they definitely deserve it!
