It’s no secret that Malaysians, especially those from the B40 and M40 communities, are struggling with inflation and the price hikes that come with it.

And with that being said, the Sales and Service Tax (SST) implemented in Malaysia is going to increase from 6% to 8% starting March 1, 2024 (Friday).

Netizens are now praising Ayer Hitam member of parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong after he called for the government to exempt the SST hike for electricity and water bills to help the people endure the already hostile financial landscape. Astro AWANI took to their Twitter page to showcase his plea at the recent Parliamentary session.

During his session, he said, “My question is, are the honorable ministers ready to fight so that electricity bills and water bills are not subjected to the SST increase on March 1? Because water and electricity are 2 basic needs. If we can give telecommunications an exemption from the increase of 6% to 8%, then why not (for electricity and water as well)?”

“We even gave (exemptions) for parking. And for food it remains at 6%. I am begging the ministers, please.”

The people’s MP?

Many have since shared positive reviews of his fight for SST to remain at 6% for electricity and water bills so that the people won’t feel so burdened over basic necessities.
