With the ongoing pandemic, life is far from normal and many people are suffering due to unemployment. It’s been an exceptionally difficult period for fresh grads as it seems like they are jumping from the pan and into the fire as jobs are scarce nowadays.
Little opportunities for fresh grads
As for Business fresh graduate Anthony Tham (25, from Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan) and his significant other Wynne Na (22, from Batu Pahat, Johor), they were fresh out of college in December 2020 with excellent results. However, both of them failed to secure a job due to the pandemic and the current economy. After asking around, Anthony realised that this is the case with the rest of his coursemates as well.
Be it as it may, the couple is from middle-income families. Hence, they can’t sit around and wait for opportunities to come to them.
“We did not request support from our parents as we are aware that they are overcoming their own challenges and we do not want to burden them.”
Thinking long and hard, he and his girlfriend decided to create their own opportunity by starting a business with their savings. Hence, Bōl Bōl, the brainchild of Anthony and Wynne was born.
Building a business from scratch
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, the couple says that the core value of their business is to provide affordable meals that were made with love. The reason behind the low prices is as follows:
“We understand that times are tough and we hope to provide affordability so that no one goes to bed hungry.”
Bōl Bōl is a home-based virtual restaurant that serves various affordable and large-portion meals which suits the tastes of locals and will definitely bring a smile to your face! Their meals taste just like home-cooked food as they are prepared with quality ingredients and most importantly, careful attention to detail and much love. In order to ensure that healthy and yummy food is accessible to all, they cook all their sauces from scratch with their very own recipe. The best thing is that they are all naturally flavoured and guaranteed to be MSG-free.
Their signature meals include the Buttermilk Chicken Rice Bōl, Blackpepper Chicken Rice Bōl, Spaghetti Bolognese Bōl, Spaghetti Carbonara Bōl, and Garlic Rice Bōl. All their meals are all Muslim-friendly as they do not serve pork.
Business during the pandemic
Bōl Bōl officially started their business officially in May 2021 and it is fairly new with few people knowing of their existence. Hence, it is a little bit hard to pull customers to buy from them.
“Our business has not been doing well and we are having a hard time paying rent.”
“Sometimes there are not more than five customers a day and with our current revenue, it will only be able to cover the raw materials; as we are selling our items at a very low price to ensure affordability. If this goes on we might not be able to sustain our business.”
Please support Bōl Bōl!
