Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic hit us, we’ve learnt something about our fellow community members. We love to panic buy.
Just yesterday, there was a notice by the Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) in regards to the Sungai Dua water treatment plant having to shut down, causing water pressures around Penang to drop.
According to the Penang Kini Facebook page, upon the announcement of the issue, Penangites went into a panic buying frenzy. They bought up most of the water available at stores and supermarkets.
They wrote, “There it is, people scrambling to buy water. Don’t panic. Be calm. According to PBAPP, the water supply for the whole of Penang is set to be fully restored by 12pm (Thursday).”
In the video showcased, people can be seen stocking up on boxes upon boxes of packaged water. Some shopping carts can be seen with up to 8 huge boxes of water, while the shelves that once displayed bottled water were emptied.
While it is understandable water shortages can be super inconvenient, especially for families with small children, let’s also not forget to only purchase what we need and also to consider the needs of others.
We genuinely hope that they recycle all those plastic bottles after they are done with them.
