20-year-old Malaysian Figure Skater, Julian Yee has been making the rounds on social media recently, when a video of him competing at the CS Nebelhorn Trophy from September 2017 resurfaced on a Figure Skating facebook page.
It’s an especially enjoyable watch as he plays about with the music and seemingly dances with ease on the slippery surface.

This man has some fancy footwork! Look out for those seamless costume changes! Even the crowd can’t contain their excitement, clapping along at certain points in the performance. Especially when he does that thing with his shirt *winkwink*
It’s surprising that most of us Malaysians have not seen this amazing performance ourselves!
So who is this dashing cape-wielding figure skater who has captured the hearts (and likes!) of social media users around the globe?
Julian Yee is the first ever Malaysian figure skater to compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics. He even won the 2017 SEA games held in Kuala Lumpur last year. Not bad when the closest thing Malaysians get to snow is ice kacang.
The video was uploaded by user Ina Ova on the 20th of April on the International Figure Skating facebook page, and it has since racked up over 13k reactions! She commented saying she was surprised at the support the video has gotten and that watching this video of him perform has been such a joy.
After this very performance he had been ranked sixth overall, which helped him qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics! Clearly the judges were just as impressed as we were! He’s certainly come a long way to have represented Malaysia, from being a 12-year-old at an ice skating camp in PyeongChang, South Korea and practicing at the local ice skating rinks in the mall, to carrying the Malaysian flag at the Winter Olympics last February.
Even though he didn’t make it to the finals of the Winter Olympics, he’s won our hearts, and his dedication to skating will keep us yearning for more.
