With the ongoing inflation, prices of goods are getting higher and higher. As consumers, we can’t help but wonder, how much are we willing to pay for an item?

A restaurant in Cheras recently went viral when a customer revealed that she was charged Rm40 for fried rice with 6 prawns, which was meant to serve 2 people. Some believe that with that portion of fried rice, the pricing was acceptable and others think that it was still too pricy for fried rice.

“I have never cheated my customers”

In an interview with Sin Chew, the hawker took the opportunity to justify his prices and clarified that he has been using the best ingredients in his cooking.

He also stated that the prices for his food are all disclosed on the menu, with the cheapest one being RM8 for egg-fried rice. The customer who paid RM40 ordered 2 sets of Prawn Fried Rice, which is priced at RM20 per set.

“I used Phoenix Shrimp from Sabah. Each pack contains 16 shrimps, which costs me RM48. The capital for 1 shrimp is RM3. My profit was only around RM12 for the 2 sets of fried rice,” he explained.

He also reminded everyone to check on the prices before making an order as everything was disclosed on the menu.

For a plate of prawn fried rice, it comes with fragrant rice, 3 prawns, some vegetables, and 3 eggs. As the customer ordered 2 sets, the hawker doubled the ingredients. When it comes to his Rm12 profit for 2 sets of prawn fried rice, the hawker said the amount of profit is reasonable.

In response to criticisms that said he’s cheating customers, the hawker denied all allegations and said he is not even driving a luxury car or living in a mansion.

“I make around Rm5,000 in a month. I have a wife and children to take care of, and I never take advantage of my customers.”

You can check out the menu below.
