A Houston high school student in Texas, United States stood out from the rest of his class during the final exams last Wednesday (16 December 2020) when he came wearing a full hazmat suit. As reported by abc7, the student, Mason Kalkofen said that he took the initiative because he was worried about contracting Covid-19 at his school and spreading it to his mother who is at high risk to the virus because of medical conditions that she has.
When contacted, the Kalkofen family said that Mason’s school, Spring Woods High and the district in which they’re living in, seem to not be taking the pandemic seriously at all. Hence, the utilisation of the head-to-toe hazmat suit by Mason during the final exams.
Mason commented,
“I’m having to go in a hazmat suit. That way I can protect my family.”
Furthermore, Mason’s parents stressed that they have tried every avenue to get the district to make an exemption regarding the final exam for safety reasons. The school themselves have issued multiple letters this month alone about positive cases in their campus.
The mother, Margarita Kalkofen, when contacted by local media said,
“I don’t want to get sick. I don’t want to end up in a hospital. I don’t want my husband to end up in the hospital because the school district doesn’t care.”
Meanwhile, following Mason’s endeavour being viral, the school district released a lengthy statement saying that it has followed state guidelines and that safety is of utmost importance to them during this pandemic.
Well, it seems that the school doesn’t take safety as important as Mason though, as the wearing of the hazmat suit showcased.
What do you guys think? Would you have done the same thing if you were in Mason’s shoes? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
