United States-based Colorado Children’s Chorale went viral in our country recently for their performance of Kira! (count) in Bahasa Malaysia.
A video of the performance was shared by Malaysian choreographer Fairuz Fee Tauhid on TikTok, garnering over 882,000 views and 88,500 likes in just 2 days.
Fairuz, who choreographed the movement for the performance shared that Kira! is based on Malay proverbs and was written by Dr Tracy Wong, who also led the performance. Wong is a Malaysian based in Ontario, Canada and is a choral conductor, music educator, vocalist, pianist and composer.
As the name of the piece would suggest, the three-part treble choir has the group counting in Malay in the piece, from 1 until 8 to be exact.
It also merges counting with sage advice with the use of Malay proverbs such as “sediakan payung sebelum hujan”, “bersusah susah dahulu bersenang kemudian” and “yang bulat tak datang bergolek, yang pipih tak datang melayang”.
The performance was actually in April for but became viral recently after Fairuz uploaded the video on his TikTok account.
Previously, Wong shared the video on her YouTube account and revealed that she wrote the song after Emily Crile, the Artistic Director for the group commissioned her to create the work for their Spring 2023 concert.
