July hasn’t been a good month for Pakatan Harapan, with two of its politicians tragically passing away within just weeks of each other. While many Malaysians have been sending their condolences, some have fallen under criticism for making rude comments regarding these tragic deaths.
According to Malaysian Insight, Umno’s Secretary-General and Ketereh Member of Parliament (MP) Annuar Musa, recently spoke to about 1,000 Umno members at the Jalan Siswi Kanan election centre about the Sungai Kandis by-election. He reportedly told attendees,
“Do you know why we are having this by-election? Because God wants to test Selangor. Before this (Sg Kandis) has begun its campaign, there will be another one in Balakong. Maybe God will decide to have more by-elections.”
“We don’t know where the next one will be. Maybe it’s Langkawi or maybe it’s Bera. Let’s just hope it’s not in Ketereh.”
He even went on to predict more by-elections in the near future, saying,
“I think there’s at least one more in Selangor. Let’s use these by-elections as a training ground before GE15.”
According to Free Malaysia Today, he also predicted that Pakatan Harapan would only last for two and a half years in Putrajaya as the ruling government.
The current MP for Langkawi is Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahahtir Mohamad, while Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri is the MP of Bera.
Recently, PKR’s Sungai Kandis state representative Shuhaimi Shafiei passed away from cancer earlier this month (2nd July), leaving the constituency’s seat currently vacant.
Most recently, a DAP assemblyman for Balakong, Eddie Ng Tien Chee, tragically passed away in a road accident on the Grand Saga highway last week (20th July).
In light of the Umno Secretary-General’s statement, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh along with prominent lawyer and activist Ambiga Sreenevasan took to social media to voice their outrage over Annuar Musa’s comments.
Such a wicked proposition. Evil.
God is love. https://t.co/nI40EPcgOE

This is in exceedingly poor taste and cruel. https://t.co/sh4w6ZvsnB
