UMNO leaders have confirmed that they want the dissolution of Parliament to take place this year, but whether or not General Election will be held this year remains to be seen.
Reaching a consensus, members of UMNO’s ‘top five’ met yesterday evening at the KL World Trade Centre, involving UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
In the post meet up, several UMNO leaders were interviewed by reporters, most of whom agreed that dissolution of Parliament is a must.
According to Datuk Seri Bung Mokhtar: “We will leave it to the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri). We think it is the right time for elections.”
“If you ask me (for elections), this is the right time.”
Another UMNO representative, Datuk Zahid Zainul Abidin said: “We all agreed to dissolve Parliament this year.”
“We will have to wait for further announcements (for General Elections). We fear that there may be unforeseen possibilities like heavy rain, earthquakes, people dying or if we are in a state of emergency.”
UMNO VP Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin said that the discussion was merely to share about the readiness of the party if a General Election was to be held.
Currently, under Federal Constitution, a general election must be held within 60 days of Parliament dissolution, with the current Parliament’s terms set to run until July 2023.
