Imagine the coverage Malaysians can get with this merger!

Axiata Group Berhad announced in a statement today (8 April) that Axiata and Telenor Asia are in advanced discussions on the merger of the telco operations of Celcom Axiata Berhad and Digi.com Berhad. Axiata together with Malaysian institutional funds will own over 51% in the merger.

Axiata said the latest move was to combine the scale, infrastructure, experience, and financial strength of the two companies to offer better products and services to customers while emerging as the leading Malaysian Telco.

The merger will be named Celcom Digi Berhad and will continue to be listed on Bursa Malaysia. Axiata clarified that the merger will not result in any forcible layoffs of Celcom or Digi employees. Instead, will create opportunities for staff to continue to develop across functions, build new competence and be part of the future growth of the company as it explores new technologies and innovation.

If you’re wondering if you will have to change your plans, worry not as customers will be able to maintain their choice of mobile operator brand. You can also expect a better quality of service and at competitive rates!

Chairman of the Axiata Board, Tan Sri Ghazzali Sheikh Abdul Khalid, said that this merger will see the coming together of the largest mobile operator with the firepower to trigger tremendous opportunities in helping Malaysia leapfrog into the Fourth Industrial Revolution and fulfil our vision of a digitised nation.

“As we face fierce competition from global internet-based services and content providers, our stronger position will allow for better negotiation levers for we choose to compete and cooperate.”
