There’s something very Malaysian about how food always seems to find its way into our most memorable moments. It’s there when the whole family gathers after a big achievement, when friends come together to celebrate, or when you simply decide to treat someone else to a meal.

With Merdeka and Hari Malaysia around the corner, we came across a few heartwarming stories that capture exactly that spirit!

From an unexpected love story that began on a commercial set to a simple meal that brought a community together, these moments show how the little things we do for one another can become memories worth holding on to.

Here are a few wholesome Malaysian moments that’ll have you smiling.

1. A sweet family surprise

One Malaysian family recently found themselves on the receiving end of a very unexpected KFC surprise after a video of them celebrating together at home caught people’s attention online.

The original video showed the family dancing and having a good time together in their living room. The mother had originally shared the video simply to capture a happy memory for her children to look back on.

But after people started tagging KFC and asking the brand to surprise the family, they ended up receiving a giant customised chicken bucket featuring their family portrait, along with vouchers and personalised Geng Kepci bucket hats.

Perhaps the cutest part was hearing about the family’s individual KFC habits, like the daughter who insists her burger comes with no vegetables at all.😂 Sometimes, it’s these ordinary moments around food that become the memories we remember most.

2. They met on set & then got married

Some love stories begin at school or work. For Irfan and Ellyna, theirs started on the set of a KFC festive commercial in 2021.

The two were hired as talents for the shoot, but their on-set introduction eventually turned into something a little more personal. Fast-forward a few years, and the pair were standing together as newlyweds. Naturally, they decided to bring things full circle by having KFC as part of their wedding reception.

Their white-and-red themed celebration featured KFC buckets filled with red roses, custom photo booth strips and, of course, fried chicken alongside the wedding spread.

From co-stars on a commercial set to husband and wife, Irfan and Ellyna’s story couldn’t have had a sweeter ending.

3. A graduation surprise to remember

This video shows a graduation surprise for a university graduate named Sophia, who decided to make her big day a little more memorable.

After reaching out to KFC via email to ask if they would celebrate the milestone with her, the university graduate was surprised when the team actually showed up on campus with a full Geng Kepci setup, complete with the Chicky mascot, themed props, a giant “Class of 2025 #GengKepci” photo frame and even a bouquet made with money and vouchers.

But the sweetest part was having her parents there, who shared that KFC has long been their family’s go-to treat whenever their children achieved something.

So while graduation marked a new chapter for Sophia, celebrating it with something familiar made the milestone even more special.

4. A meal for nenek became something bigger

Sometimes, one small act of kindness can bring a whole community together. That was the case with Kak Santy, a Grab driver who previously took an elderly woman affectionately known as “Nenek” out for a meal — which happened to be her first time trying KFC. The sweetest part was hearing Nenek say that no one had ever treated her to something like this before.

But the story didn’t stop at one meal. With the help of Nenek’scucu-cucu online” and local volunteers, Kak Santy and KFC organised a gotong-royong at Nenek’s home, with everyone pitching in to clean the house.

And once the work was done, everyone gathered outside to share a meal together. It’s a very Malaysian kind of kindness; one person helps out, others join in, and a simple act of kindness brings everyone together.

5. A sweet surprise for a street vendor

Sometimes, being remembered can mean more than we realise. In this video, the KFC team revisits an elderly street food vendor in Kuala Lumpur’s Jalan Sultan area, whom they first met and featured a year ago.

While he goes about preparing snacks at his stall, the team surprises him with buckets of fried chicken and cold drinks for him and the nearby vendors. Clearly touched by the surprise, he happily showed off an old photo bucket and reminisced about his time in the neighbourhood.

There’s no big occasion here, just a group of neighbours sharing a meal, which somehow makes the moment feel all the more Malaysian.

Maybe that’s what makes these moments so Malaysian

Looking at all five stories, there’s no one way Malaysians celebrate. And it’s pretty heartwarming to see how KFC has naturally become part of so many of these moments, whether it’s families celebrating, couples looking back on how they met, neighbours coming together, or strangers showing up for someone who needs a little kindness.

This Merdeka and Hari Malaysia, let’s celebrate the little moments that bring us closer. Here’s to the laughter, kindness, and little traditions that remind us what being Malaysian is all about.

Have a Malaysian moment of your own to share? Share your story and join the #GengKepci community, you never know who it might bring a smile to.
