In what is believed to be the first in India, a transgender couple in Kerala has welcomed their baby this morning at a state-run hospital in Kozhikode.
According to Outlook India, “it is believed to be the first instance of a transgender man being pregnant and delivering a child in India“.
Ziya Paval took to Instagram last week to announce that her partner, Zahhad was already eight months pregnant. Since then, the pregnancy photos she shared of them had gone viral.
“We are about to realise my dream of becoming a mother and his dream of becoming a father. An eight-month-old foetus is now in (Zahhad’s) belly,” Ziya wrote in her Instagram post.
Pausing hormone therapy
You may ask, “How is this possible?” Well, the female reproductive organs of uterus and ovaries are key to getting pregnant. “If a transman – who is transitioning from a biological woman to a man – has retained these organs, then he can become pregnant.”
Both Ziya and Zahhad were undergoing hormone therapy when Zahhad, who was transitioning to become a man, got pregnant. He was undergoing the process of breast removal therapy when he paused it for the pregnancy.
The couple, who has been living together for the past three years thanks their families and doctors for their support.
Congratulations on your new bundle of joy, Ziya and Zahhad!
