Perhentian is known to be one of the must-visit islands in Malaysia. Many tourists who have visited the said island have raved about it but a recent incident has shocked many netizens, especially Malaysians.
In a recent video circulating online, @itsrafaaa shares her not-so-pleasant experience of visiting Pulau Perhentian with her sister for the very first time.
“Perhentian is a wild place”
In the video, Rafa detailed her experience, recounting how she was allegedly chased by a worker from an eatery who she claims scammed her into paying a higher amount after initially promising her a discount.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, she explained that she had breakfast at a beachfront eatery. After paying RM50 for their meal, a worker suggested they go snorkelling, promising her a discount.
The worker also mentioned that the snorkelling activity was her brother’s new job and that she needed to pay just RM30 per person. Thinking she was getting a discount because it was a weekday, Rafa agreed and paid RM30 per person for the snorkelling activity, wanting to support local businesses.
“Not me almost getting killed over RM30”
After the snorkelling activity was over, the cafe worker’s brother, who served as Rafa and her sister’s boat captain when snorkelling, dropped them off at their homestay on the island. They were exhausted, having just arrived in Perhentian earlier that day.
Upon their arrival, the boat driver informed them that his sister (the cafe worker) mentioned that Rafa had not paid the full price for snorkelling, which took Rafa by surprise.
His sister eventually came over from the cafe which was close by, to inform Rafa that she had only paid RM30 and would need to settle the remaining balance of RM70.
“I even considered tipping the boat driver who took us snorkelling because he was kind and we received a discount. However, she didn’t even allow me to speak to him after we got off the boat.”
One of the workers allegedly chased her with a knife
During the argument, Rafa described how the worker threatened to call the police if she didn’t pay the remaining balance.
“I got angry because she started shouting at us, and everyone was staring. The worker then insisted that I pay, eventually agreeing to settle for an additional RM30 (instead of RM70), so I just threw the money at her. Then, suddenly, her friend appeared and began chasing me with a knife.”
When asked for advice for visitors to Perhentian, Rafa suggested that,
“Workers should clearly communicate and confirm prices in writing before suggesting any activities to avoid scams. My advice is to be cautious and double-check everything before you travel.”
