Popular South Indian actor Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, affectionately known as Vijay, stated Malaysia’s multicultural makeup and long-standing Tamil community have helped keep the Tamil language and cinema alive far beyond India.

Speaking to nearly 80,000 fans at the audio launch of his 69th film, Jana Nayagan, at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on 27 December, Vijay praised Malaysia for its large audience and strong preservation of Tamil culture in a diverse society, according to BERNAMA.

Vijay praises Malaysian Tamils for keeping the Tamil language alive

The 51-year-old noted that Tamils now live in over 150 countries worldwide, with Malaysia being home to one of the largest Tamil communities outside India, making it a key pillar of the global Tamil cultural ecosystem.

He also highlighted Malaysia’s multicultural harmony, adding that inclusivity is reflected in everyday cultural practices that cross ethnic and religious boundaries.

“Malaysia is special because Tamil culture here has thrived alongside other cultures, languages, and faiths. That coexistence has helped Tamil cinema and traditions stay alive across generations,” he said.

Vijay also noted that Malaysia’s strong engagement with Tamil films has made the country a respected reference point in the industry, with overseas audiences often shaping how Tamil cinema is remembered around the world.

Looking back on his 33-year film career, he said his fans had stood by him through his toughest moments, including periods of criticism, hardship, and uncertainty early on.

He added that his dedication now goes beyond cinema, saying he’s decided to stand with his fans and the people for the next three decades, just as they have supported him from the very beginning.
