This article has been updated on Sept 4 to include official statements from Dolly Dim Sum, Black Canyon, and Johnny’s Restaurant. You may find the latest updates at the end of the article.
In an official statement today (September 3), JAKIM clarifies the halal status of 5 popular restaurants in Malaysia, namely,
- Black Canyon
- Johnny’s Restaurant
- Mr. Dakgalbi
- Bungkus Kaw Kaw
- Dolly Dim Sum.
JAKIM confirmed that these 5 popular restaurants do not have Halal certificates. However, none of these restaurants serve pork or alcohol and are Muslim-friendly.
The statement came following the circulation of JAKIM’s letter regarding the halal certificate status of the brands mentioned above.
“After receiving questions from the public through the online complaint management system last night (2nd), the authorities conducted an investigation and confirmed the news,” JAKIM said.
In the meantime, JAKIM also provided clarity on the Halal status of another restaurant, Ayam Penyet Best.
“Only 4 outlets of Ayam Penyet Best have Halal certificates.”
JAKIM, however, did not provide the specific locations of the 4 outlets that are Halal. According to Ayam Penyet Best’s official website, the organisation has a total of 15 outlets throughout Malaysia.
In an official statement posted by Ayam Penyet Best on its Facebook this afternoon, the management explained that their central kitchen which supplies raw materials and food to all branches got a halal certificate effective in 2012.
To our Muslim friends, you can visit the official halal certification website here and check if your favourite restaurants have obtained Halal certificates.
UPDATE (September 4): As of last night (September 3), Dolly Dim Sum posted an update via its Instagram Story to assure patrons that the ingredients and semi-cooked food from the central kitchen are certified Halal from JAKIM.
Dolly Dim Sum also said that they are in the process of getting Halal certificates for all their outlets. You can click on this link to see the restaurant’s Halal status from time to time.
On the other hand, the management of Black Canyon and Johnny’s Restaurant also reached out to WORLD OF BUZZ and said that as of today (September 4), both restaurants have yet to be certified Halal.
However, all ingredients used are sourced from suppliers with Halal certification, and both restaurants do NOT use any form of alcohol or wine in their cooking.
