We all agree that our country Malaysia is definitely beautiful, from our geography to our people. However, we never really talk about our buildings other than KLCC, although they are equally as beautiful.
This Thai photographer, Weerapon Singnoi, who operates a photography page on Facebook called Foto_momo, has since shown us the beauty of the modern movement in Malaysian architecture.
On the 28th of July, he started uploading pictures into an album called mASEANa: Kuala Lumpur. mASEANa (modern ASEAN architecture) is a project that was started in 2015 and will go on until 2020. The aim of this project is to document modern architecture in south-east Asia and their history. It is also to preserve these buildings.
Under mASEANa, Weerapon had the chance to give a little lecture on architectural photography to some students. The workshop allowed them to enter buildings such as our parliament. He said that the modernism movement is definitely post-Merdeka and has colonial British influences.
In an interview with Khaosod, Weerapon, who holds an architecture degree from Silpakorn University, said that “Modernism is an important part of architectural history that, for the sake of continuity, cannot go missing.”
We definitely agree on that, Weerapon! We would also like to say thank you for showing the world the beauty of our architecture!
